SOMA, short for South of Market, is broadly defined as the area surrounded by Market Street to the northwest, the San Francisco Bay to the northeast, Mission Creek to the southeast, and US-101 to the southwest. It includes several sub-neighborhoods, such as South Beach, Mission Bay, and Rincon Hill.
SOMA is the most promising, up-and-coming area to invest in real estate. This is the fastest growing area in San Francisco and will continue to transform the City as highlighted by the Transit Center District and 5M plans. Together the two ambitious urban plans will create more than 5 acres of new public parks and open space, about 5,100 new residential units, over 6.5 million square feet of office space, and 30,000 permanent jobs. Anchoring the Transit Center District as the beacon of San Francisco’s new skyline and symbol of future progress will be the 1,070 ft. Salesforce Tower. Upon its completion, it will be the second tallest tower west of the Mississippi River.
SOMA is the headquarters of several major software and internet companies, including Salesforce, Yelp, LinkedIn, Dropbox, Pinterest, Wired, Airbnb, Uber, Zynga, Wikia, CBS Interactive, Advent Software, and IGN. It is also home to many of the City’s museums and entertainment centers, such as AT&T Park. Moscone Center is centrally located in SOMA and hosts many of the city’s largest professional gatherings – Oracle OpenWorld, Macworld Expo, Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, Google I/O, Salesforce, and Dreamforce conferences.
Some of the smaller neighborhoods contained within SOMA are South Park, Rincon Hill, Yerba Buena, South Beach, Mission Bay, and the southern part of the Financial District.
