Bernal Heights is a quiet residential neighborhood, removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown and other busier neighborhoods in San Francisco. The streets are primarily made up of single family residences, some Victorian and impressive, others from the mid-20th century and of modest architectural origins. Homes have been a considerable bargain here compared to the rest of the city. Surrounding space is also generous here as many residents use their backyards to plant gardens, work on art projects, or simply relax in a private outdoor setting. Its curved and winding streets set it apart from the City’s grid pattern and are remnants of the animal trails and footpaths of its farmland past. Not a tourist area, its views from the northern and western slopes rival some of the better known views of the city.
